2023 EMF Junior Races

Young Runners Shine at the 2023 Edinburgh Marathon Festival Junior Events

The 2023 Edinburgh Marathon Festival provided not only a showcase for elite athletes and marathon enthusiasts, but also a vibrant celebration of youth running at the Junior Events held on Sunday, 28 May 2023. Young athletes from across Scotland and beyond took part in races designed to inspire fitness, determination, and fun among children of all ages.

The Junior Events offered a series of races tailored to different age groups, ensuring that each child could participate at a level suited to their experience and ability. Children aged 3 to 7 ran in the Mini Marathon, a shorter course designed to introduce young participants to the excitement of racing in a safe and supportive environment. For older children, aged 8 to 12, the 2K and 3K races offered a slightly longer challenge, giving them a taste of what it feels like to compete in a larger sporting event.

On the morning of the festival, the atmosphere at Holyrood Park was electric. Families lined the course to cheer on their children, while volunteers and marshals helped ensure a smooth and safe running experience. The sound of laughter and applause filled the air as tiny feet pounded the paths, with each runner demonstrating determination, enthusiasm, and, above all, joy.

The event also emphasized the importance of healthy competition and personal achievement. Young runners were encouraged to focus on finishing their race and celebrating their own progress, rather than solely on winning. Many children were seen crossing the finish line with huge smiles, some holding hands with friends, while others proudly displayed medals given to every participant as a token of accomplishment.

Parents, guardians, and spectators were quick to praise the organisers for creating an inclusive environment that allowed children to experience the thrill of a race while building confidence and resilience. Teachers and coaches also noted the benefits of events like these in promoting physical activity, teamwork, and a lifelong love of running.

Among the highlights of the day were several inspirational moments, including siblings running side by side, young runners who had overcome personal challenges, and first-time participants experiencing the exhilaration of crossing a finish line. Each story contributed to the overall sense of community that makes the Edinburgh Marathon Festival’s Junior Events so special.

By the end of the day, it was clear that the Junior Events had achieved their goal: not only did they provide a fun and exciting sporting experience, but they also encouraged a new generation of athletes to embrace running as part of a healthy, active lifestyle. Parents and children alike left the festival motivated to continue their training and participate in future events, inspired by the camaraderie and achievement they had witnessed.

The 2023 Edinburgh Marathon Festival’s Junior Events were a shining example of how sport can bring people together, create lasting memories, and foster confidence and determination in children. With another festival already on the horizon, organisers hope to continue building on this success, encouraging even more young runners to take to the course and enjoy the thrill of the race.
