WHY WE WERE ESTABLISHED  -  The John Thornton Young Achievers Foundation (JTYAF) was established in 2008 to honour the memory of John Thornton, a young Royal Marines Officer from Ferndown who was tragically killed, at the age of 22, whilst serving in Afghanistan.  John had achieved so much in his short life, the provision of opportunities for local young people to achieve both their ambitions and potential in life was a fitting legacy of which John would be immensely proud.

WHAT WE DO  -  The JTYAF has now supported more than 2000 local young people since its formation in 2008 with awards of £750,000.  Bursaries and scholarships have been awarded to young people from 18 local youth organisations and schools.

The JTYAF is providing many young people with the opportunity to fulfil their ambitions in life and to really develop as individuals.  Young people have been supported on expeditions to Tanzania, India, Ecuador, Peru, Grenada, Cape Town, China, Kenya, Nepal, Japan and the Pyrenees, funding has been awarded to Olympic hopefuls in ice skating, swimming, power lifting, cycling, horse riding, badminton, and awards given for trombones, telescopes, cameras, educational support for dyslexia, music tuition, sailing expeditions, the list is endless and demonstrates the diversity which the JTYAF encourages.

Entrants who run for the JTYAF will know that every step they take, and every pound they raise, will make a huge difference to the lives of local young people.
